How to Download & Install WoW China Client
Disclaimer: This tutorial is intended for technical testing, interface verification, or research purposes. Please be aware that the Chinese (CN) version of World of Warcraft operates on a separate infrastructure managed by NetEase. Your Global (US/EU/KR/TW) Battle.net account will not work. To actually play the game, you require a Chinese Resident Identity Card and a valid Chinese phone number.
There are two methods to access the client: the Shortcut Modification Method (Recommended for temporary testing) and the Native Installer Method.
Method 1: The Shortcut Modification (Recommended)
This method allows you to use your existing Global Battle.net installation to access the China region without uninstalling your current setup.
Steps:
- Locate Battle.net: Find your existing Battle.net desktop shortcut. If you don’t have one, locate
Battle.net.exein your installation folder, right-click it, and select “Create Shortcut”. - Open Properties: Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Modify the Target:
- Locate the Target field. It will look something like
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Battle.net\Battle.net.exe". - Add a space at the very end, followed by:
--setregion=CN - The final text should look like this:Plaintext
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Battle.net\Battle.net.exe" --setregion=CN
- Locate the Target field. It will look something like
- Launch: Click Apply and then OK. Run the shortcut.
- Region Selection:
- The Battle.net login window will appear.
- Click the Gear icon (Settings) usually located above the login fields.
- Under “Region,” you should now see China (often displayed as 中国) as an option. Select it.
- Client Restart: The client may restart to download a small configuration update for the CN region.
Method 2: The Native CN Installer
Use this method if Method 1 fails or if you want a completely clean installation separate from your global client.
Steps:
- Visit the Official Site: Go to the official Blizzard China website (usually
wow.blizzard.cnorbattlenet.com.cn). - Download: Look for the download button for the Battle.net App (战网客户端).
- Install: Run the installer.
- Note: The installer interface will likely be in Simplified Chinese. The big blue button is usually “Install” or “Continue”.
- Login: Once installed, this client is hardcoded to the CN region.
Installing the Game Data
Once you have the Battle.net client running in the China region:
- Create/Login to Account: You will see a prompt to log in.
- Note: You cannot use a US/EU email. You must register a new account specifically for the CN region.
- Select WoW: Navigate to the World of Warcraft tab.
- Install/Locate Game:
- If you already have WoW installed (Global version), click the link below the “Install” button that says “Locate the game” (or “Already Installed?”). Point it to your existing WoW folder.
- The client will verify the files and download CN-specific data (Simplified Chinese text, audio, and modified art assets to comply with local regulations).
- If you do not have WoW, click Install to download the full client (approx. 100GB+).
Important Notes for Testers
- Real ID Verification: You will likely hit a roadblock immediately after account creation. Chinese regulations require a valid Resident Identity Card ID and a matching Chinese phone number to play. Without these, you may be limited to the login screen or unable to enter the world.
- Censorship/Model Changes: The CN client contains modifications to undead models (no exposed bones), blood color (often darkened), and ability icons to comply with local content laws.
- Latency: Connecting to CN servers from outside China often results in high latency or packet loss. A game accelerator (UU Booster, etc.) is usually required for a stable connection.
- Reverting to Global: To switch back to your normal region, simply use your original Battle.net shortcut (without the
--setregion=CNtag) or change the region back to Americas/Europe in the login cogwheel menu.
